Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery
Patients who have single vessel coronary disease or only require surgery for one of their heart valves may be candidates for minimally invasive surgery – where the surgery is performed without splitting the breastbone and fully opening the chest. For patients, the benefits are enormous: they experience less surgical trauma, decreased blood loss, reduced risk of infection, reduced pain immediately post surgery, a better cosmetic result and importantly, a faster recovery period.
Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery
Mitral Valve disease is diagnosed when the valve is unable to function appropriately. This can be when the valve fails to open properly limiting the blood flow (mitral stenosis) or when the valve fails to close causing a backwards leak (mitral regurgitation). Certain patients may be able to have their valve repaired or replaced without fully opening the chest (mini mitral). Dr Bassin will perform the surgery using minimally invasive techniques which ensures less pain and trauma for the patient and a far quicker recovery.
Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Surgery
The aortic valve allows blood to flow out of the heart into the aorta to supply the entire body with oxygen and nutrients. The aortic valve can fail if it either doesn’t open sufficiently (aortic stenosis) or fails to close causing the blood to leak back into the heart (aortic regurgitation). Certain patients may be able to have their valve replaced without splitting the breastbone. Dr Bassin will perform the surgery using minimally invasive techniques which ensures less pain and trauma for the patient and a far quicker recovery.
Robotic Coronary Bypass Surgery
Patients who are diagnosed with single vessel disease in the most important coronary artery (the LAD) may be candidates for Robotic Coronary Artery Bypass (Robotic CABG). These patients can experience the long-term benefits of bypass surgery over coronary stents without the long recovery period and trauma of major open heart surgery.
